Expanding to new biological models for disease will enhance translation of observation to therapy. While genomics and bioinformatics have expanded exponentially since the human genome initiative, only a minor creep forward has occurred in new biological model species. The field of observation remains focussed on mouse, Drosophila and a few other species despite thousands of other species in which genomics data have accumulated. Why? There is a tremendous momentum and establishment behind the train of few model organisms for disease which may be preventing switches onto new tracks into new territories for observation. A new approach is proposed to introduce a native woodnymph butterfly, Cercyonis pegala, as a model for metastatic disease drawing extensively from genomic and bioinformatic advances. Usefulness of this new invertebrate model will be demonstrated with clear contrast and comparison to the typical reliance on Drosophila.
